Description
Situated just outside Edinburgh, the House is set in 150 acres of rolling parkland with extensive woodland walks, breathtaking visits on the River Forth and a deer park, it is one of the most splendid examples of the work of Scottish architects Sir William Bruce, William Adam and his sons John and Robert.

Building began in 1699 and since its completion in the mid 18th century the House has remained substantially unaltered save for the introduction of the State Dining Room by James Gillespie Graham in the Regency period.

The magnificent interiors boast fine paintings, original furnishings and décor, tapestries and objects d’art with Aubusson tapestries and fabulous chandeliers in the Ballroom. The Stables Tearoom offers wonderful lunches and tempting snacks with champagne afternoon teas a speciality.

Hopetoun has been the home of the Earls of Hopetoun, later created Marquesses of Linlithgow, since it was built in 1699 and part of the House is still lived in today by the present Marquess and his family. The House, however, is owned and managed by an independent, charitable trust created in 1974 by the current Marquess and his father in order to preserve the House with its historic contents and surrounding landscape for the enjoyment and education of the public for all time.

The House is approached from the Royal Drive, used only by members of the Royal Family, notably King George IV in 1822, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 1988, The Princess Royal in 1997 and the Duke of Rothesay in 1999.

You can be assured of attention to detail, culinary excellence and superior and imaginative service at Hopetoun as they are acknowledged leaders in the hospitality industry, while their experienced event managers and award winning in-house caterers pride themselves in looking after your every need.

They have a wide choice of rooms to dine in, from the State Dining Room (up to 24 guests) - The family dining room where King George IV once dined. Hung with portraits of the Hopetoun family, the State Dining Room provides an incomparable setting for smaller parties. The family dining table set with white linen, silver candelabra and sparkling crystal is both intimate and stunning.

Ballroom

To the Ballroom (60 to 300 guests or up to 250 for dinner dance) - For the most splendid events, the Ballroom provides a truly glamorous setting. A blazing log fire and beautiful floral display greets guests in the Reception Hall while in the Ballroom, complete with crystal chandeliers and Aubusson tapestries, tables are set and themed to your requirements. The adjoining Tapestry Room, again with log fire, is ideal as a cocktail bar.
