Description
Having just returned from a week in Scotland I can confirm that its reputation as a country full of surprises remains alive and very well. In a sense I was relieved to know I had missed at least one of them, since it confirms a belief that there is an endless supply awaiting discovery.

One of the best hidden is Newbattle Abbey, seven miles outside Edinburgh, whose past stretches back to the 12th century when a group of Cistercian monks exercised that uncanny knack religious Orders have always had of finding an idyllic spot in which to build their homes. Since then the passage of time has included a friendly visit by King James V in 1526 who granted the Cistercians valuable concessions at Prestonpans, and more recently the establishment of an Adult Education College within and around the stunningly beautiful 16th century house built on the Abbey site and 125 acres of mature parkland. The Italian gardens alone are worth a visit and both park and gardens are open all year round.

You can be married at Newbattle Abbey, you can savour its links with Mary, Queen of Scots, the Knights Templar and the Declaration of Arbroath, and you can make your own deductions about who is buried beneath the medieval crypt. And if on completion of your visit the cup of history is still not full, the Rosslyn Chapel is only ten minutes away.

Newbattle Abbey is all about community and everything possible has been done to make its attractions and facilities widely open to all those who enjoy a unique blend of history, natural beauty, education amidst fine architecture, relaxation and genuine friendship. Make an early visit to check out this compelling piece of Scotland.
